On March 16, Jason Freeny will debut a new series of surreal sculptures at 101/exhibit in Los Angeles for his solo show, “Choice Cuts.” As the morbid-sounding title suggests, Freeny’s new body of work investigates mortality with a series of works that imagine toys as biological beings. Exaggerated imitations of the human body — like the Barbie or Kewpie Doll — become vulnerable and prone to medical incisions that expose their entrails. Freeny’s new work is both shocking and humorous; cartoon smiles and gleaming eyes soften the impact of the sculptures’ visceral qualities.
