Recontextualized Volumes of Books by Brian Dettmer

Artist Brian Dettmer from Atlanta, Georgia, who we covered in Hi-Fructose Volume 08, is concerned with how information acquisition and distribution is changing from the familiar physical book form into digital storage and mobile devices. As he meticulously excavates and alters books the recontextualized volumes take on new meaning and symbolism. Some have vibrantly colored illustrations deep inside, such as 20th Century Medica, 2012, that are revealed as he carves one layer at a time working from the front cover of the book to the back. In addition to working with books the artist uses maps, tapes, and other media that he recognizes unearthed potential in.
