Opening Night: Victor Castillo’s “Under Heavy Measures” at Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Last weekend, Victor Castillo (featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 23) premiered his solo show, "Under Heavy Measures" at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. For this new body of work, Castillo created a new series of paintings, drawings and a striking fiberglass sculpture that created haunting shadows in the gallery space. Continuing his exploration of vice, Castillo's new works deal with themes of oppression and social injustice. These heavy topics are played out in a fictional world of hollow-eyed, doll-like characters; for this exhibition, Castillo dabbled in a lighter color spectrum than usual, setting some paintings during the day and some at night. Take a look at some photos from the exhibition's opening as well as a video of its set-up by theonepointeight. after the jump.

Artist and animation director Joe Vaux paints what he likes. His personal work is teeming with impish demons.
