Canadian artist Steven Douglas Chmilar got his creative start as a musician playing in the Calgary-based band The Villains for many years. In 2007 he made the switch from playing music to painting full-time. His illustrative painting style resembles that of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance paintings that came out of the 16th century. He uses water miscible oil paints on board to create highly detailed old world narratives filled with symbolism and the delightfully absurd.
