Mercedes Helnwein’s “Make it Dark” at Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Los Angeles’ Merry Karnowsky Gallery currently has an exhibition of dimly lit drawings and paintings by Austrian artist Mercedes Helnwein. Gloomy and voyeuristic, Helnwein’s new works in the solo show “Make it Dark” peer into the lives of young ladies who appear trapped in states of boredom and disillusionment. The monochromatic works reference the 1950s with the characters’ conservative wardrobes, creating a visual tension between their odd, restless behavior and prim-and-proper attire.
