Hailing from Saint Petersburg, Russia, rising artist Lora Zombie (previously covered here) creates messy, grungy watercolor paintings with heavy doses of playfulness, perversion and sexuality. Turning away from the mythology and fairytales that fascinated her in the past, Zombie has produced a new body of work that experiments with the idea of the disguise. A cast of masked and costumed characters populate her pieces, mimicking the idea of the superhero, raising questions about double identity, or perhaps both. The sexual content is never explicit, but rather suggested through sensual details and often with a humorous spin. Her solo show “Blue Bird Lobotomy” opens at Eyes on Walls Gallery in NYC this Thursday. Take a look at a teaser video and some images from the show below.
