Last Saturday, Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles opened its doors for two solo shows, “Portals” by Mark Whalen (aka Kill Pixie) and “Stuck on a Wave” by Mel Kadel. Focusing on geometric compositions, Whalen’s latest works recall early video game design with their glowing color palette and obstacle-filled worlds where miniature characters run wild. Whalen’s glossy, resin-covered canvases are a signature part of his aesthetic and a glimpse of his process can be caught in the teaser video by theonepointeight below.

Dominated by Earth tones, Mel Kadel’s works utilize a combined technique of collage and drawing to create a layered 3D effect. Always caught in the middle of some adventure, the cartoonish female characters in her pieces seem to tell stories, giving her work an illustrative quality reminiscent of children’s books. Take a look at some photos by theonepointeight from the opening night below and check out the show before it closes on November 10.
