Last Friday, the San Jose, CA gallery Anno Domini opened the solo show of rising artist Faring Purth, who we introduced earlier this summer. Accustomed to working in a large scale for her murals, the artist created many oversized oil paintings that subtly played with color. Each painting features a portrait of an other-worldy, crane-necked woman cobbled together with organic, gestural marks that blend into a kaleidoscopic mixture of dark yet iridescent shades. As if refusing to stay within the lines of the canvas, Purth continued her marks onto the gallery walls, making the small-scale works in the show part of a larger vision.
