We first introduced Jenny Morgan‘s jarring portraits last year when Hi-Fructose correspondent JL Schnabel interviewed her for Vol.21 in 2011. Intimate and confrontational, the paintings of nude subjects display the fear and excitement that can come with exposing oneself fully, whether it’s emotionally or physically. Morgan recently closed her solo show at Plus Gallery in Denver and throughout this year, she has been creating new portraits that further develop the motifs we witnessed in her previous work.
Morgan paints from photographs of herself and her friends that she takes in her studio, using a realistic style obscured by abstract marks and blurred blocks of color. Though she primarily focuses on young female subjects, her recent work engages with more men and even a mother and child, something the artist previously found challenging.
