Since we visited John Felix Arnold III‘s Oakland studio last year, the artist has created a new body of work that hones in on a flat, cartoonish style that departs from the impressionistic portraiture we witnessed in the past. Arnold currently prepares for his solo show opening July 14, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?,” at Old Crow Tattoo & Gallery in Oakland, where he will debut drawings, paintings, sculptures and sound installations. His artistic vocabulary meshes 1960s Pop art with the expressiveness of both abstract art and graffiti. Paint strokes melt into deliberately drawn explosions, the precision of the draughtsmanship visible in the interplay of different materials.
