Keisuke Tanaka’s Forest and Mountain Sculptures

by Jane KenoyerPosted on

Japanese artist Keisuke Tanaka carves forests and mountains by hand out of very large pieces of wood. These large scale pieces are beautifully detailed and full of tiny elements that are hand painted with care. Some fill entire rooms and in turn create a feeling that one is floating above the forested landscape of Tanaka’s imagination. The fact that these carvings are done from wooden materials adds another layer of irony, that of beauty and destruction, to the already present theme of life’s beginnings and endings evident in the work.
