Artist and co-founder of Hi-Fructose, Annie Owens’ solo exhibition “Motherland” opens this weekend at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. The exhibition opens June 16th and runs through July 7th, to see the exhibition preview click here.

Owens’ highly detailed figures and houses have qualities that evoke a feeling that one could be looking at old photographs taken of secretive and mysterious places. Her work is comprised of sophisticated marks and washes. By incorporating striking black inks she creates deep ranges of value that contrast beautifully on watercolor paper.

In a recent interview Owens shares what this new body of work represents, “It’s probably about me trying to reach my roots on either side of my family tree and not yet making the connections I want to make – though the body of work isn’t intended to be an overt representation of any of that. Well, except my floating houses with trailing roots – they’re trying to get grounded.” To read the complete interview by Nathan Spoor click here.
