C3 and Aron Meynell at the Shooting Gallery

Bleak and haunting, the graphitedrawings of C3 and Aron Meynell recall film stills with their detailed photorealism. Masked figures and dead birds populate the solitarydesert landscapes and blank backgrounds, their sullen staresstretching past the viewer into distant abysses. The two artistscurrently have shows side by side at San Francisco’s ShootingGallery, drawing from nature and cinema to convey apocalypticvisions. While C3’s drawings in “Before the Sun Dies: Part I (Tempest Horizon)” (a cinematic title apt for the work’s filmic quality) present violent worlds imbued with aWestern vigilante spirit (see our studio visit with the artist here), Meynell’s drawings of birds and mammals in “…Sleep…” provoke an appreciation for their still, silent beauty. —Nastia Voynovskaya
