Artist Brett Amory
The convergence of East Coast artist Dan Witz (previewed here) and West Coast artist Brett Amory (Vol. 20) at NYC’s Jonathan LeVine gallery provided an intriguing study of how each artist uses light and time within their respective works. While Dan Witz is perhaps best known for his chaotic ‘mosh pit’ scenes of clustered people and animals, his singular portraits contain an eerie yet religious use of light when contrasted with modern technology. In stark contrast to Witz’s hyper-realism is Amory’s loose, darkly lit studies of urban life as he captures scenes of “waiting”, in which his figures are caught in transitional, liminal moments, exposing our culture’s obsession with fast paced living.
