Last Saturday, Corey Helford Gallery unveiled Los Angeles-based artist NOUAR’s first solo exhibition with them, ‘Internally Yours’. The exhibit features 3-dimensional sugary but slightly evil gelatin dessert molds- don’t let her candy colored palette fool you. NOUAR’s use of balloon animals, who have eaten everything from cute girls to eyeballs, are used as a metaphor for hidden dangers. “Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations we don’t want to be in. It feels like the world has swallowed us up whole,” NOUAR explains. While some of her oil and resin paintings are positively sinister, others such as her portrait of a cowgirl jolly-rancher “Green Apple Rancher,” offer a taste of NOUAR’s style to newcomers. Upstairs, Joshua Petker’s ‘Celluloid Constellations’ compliments the show with new portraits of lipstick smeared, joker-smiling screen legends, like Audrey Hepburn and Joan Crawford (seen here). ‘Internally Yours’ exhibits at Corey Helford Gallery, Culver City, CA, from June 11 – June 29, 2011. – Caro
