Sarah Folkman, Isabel Samaras, Krista Huot
On Saturday, Corey Helford Gallery got in touch with its feminine side with “Flight and Fable”, new work by female artists Sarah Folkman, Krista Huot, and Isabel Samaras (previewed here). Each artist has an intense fascination with the natural world, and found new inspiration in humanity’s relationship to animals, real or imaginary. Sarah Folkman’s “Experiments in Flight” featured work painted on exotic wood canvas of birds and beautifully layered nudes. Krista Huot also rendered a palette from eco-friendly materials in “Changlings”, painting her storybook themes with a refreshing mix of pop culture. They are some of her largest paintings to date. Upstairs, Isabel Samaras debuted her “Heavy Gretel” exhibition, seamlessly continuing the connection of modern day icons to wild animals. Every hour, the gallery presented guests with free mini-giclees by the artists. (I got Sarah Folkman’s “Glider”.) Full-size editions are available. Flight and Fable exhibits at Corey Helford Gallery, Culver City, CA, from May 21 – June 8, 2011. – Caro
