Set against pale backgrounds, eerie women are fashioned with bell shaped gowns and multiple limbs in Liza Corbett’s new exhibition, ‘The Summer-Land’ at Blackbird Attic. Focusing on the notion of the summer-land, a realm that resembles the afterlife where spirits meet their kin and await transportation back to the earth plane, the work resonates with the strange aspects of Spiritualism; a belief that Mediums are able to speak with the dead beyond the veil. This supernatural element works as a narrative device in which this unearthly creatures are set against the soft glow of the Summer-Land, appearing beautiful and yet forlorn.
