The Painted Collages of Kelly Allen

by Ken HarmanPosted on

Originally from Grand Rapids, MI, Kelly Allen now creates her intricate art in her new home of San Francisco. Upon first glance, one would assume her works to be that of a traditional cut and paste collage artist, however upon closer detail you’ll notice not the finely grained and glossy pages of magazines, but rather the work of a skilled painter. We contacted Kelly recently after seeing a preview of her work for the upcoming “Fracture” group show at Bold Hype in NYC. Here’s what Kelly had to say about her work:

“I am inspired by thebeauties and oddities that are discovered by taking the time to slow down andlook very closely at the world around us, and also by how the realm ofsymbolism is born from our fascination with, and reverence for thesediscoveries. Inventing these intricately rendered, nature-filled paintingsbased on the collage sketches I create from discarded books and magazines is myway of showing gratitude, tinted with a sense of dreamlike mystery.”
