In Japan, 90% of the statues of the Buddha are made from wood, and almost all of these are crafted in a wooden mosaic style, combining multiple smaller pieces to create a greater, and less heavy, whole. Japanese artist Haroshi utilizes these same mosaic techniques to create contemporary pop sculpture, and much like the masters before him, Haroshi sculpts with wood, albeit the wood used for these particular sculptures is found in discarded, broken, and found skateboard decks.
