Miami Art Week welcomed a new fair last week that went against the norm in support of its exhibiting artists. No Commission Art Fair, curated by Grammy Award-winning recording artist and producer Swizz Beatz, provided exhibition space in Wynwood to emerging artists at no cost and with artists keeping 100% of their sales. An avid contemporary collector, Swizz Beatz is no stranger to the art scene, whose namesake “The Dean Collection” drew crowds at SCOPE Miami Beach last year. No Commission was coupled by some of the week’s best parties, dubbed the “Untameable House Party”, from musical artists Swizz Beatz, his wife Alicia Keys, DMX, Wiz Khalifa, and Pusha T. As for the art, there were several new and impressive sized works on display by artists like Dustin Yellin, Hebru Brantley, Kehinde Wiley, Miss Van, Gregory Siff, Gabriel Dawe, Hyon Gyon, and Tomokazu Matsuyama, among many others featured in the pages of Hi-Fructose.
There was no escaping the madness that was Miami Art Week. While collectors and art fans alike were inside taking in all of the fairs and staying dry, more street artists than ever before descended upon the Wynwood area to leave their mark. Heavy rains and wind posed a challenge for most, but that could not keep artists like D*Face, Twoone, Nychos, Tristan Eaton, Boxhead, 1010, Caratoes, and countless others from killing several large-scale walls and collaborations. Among the largest fairs during Miami Art Week has always been the extensive Art Miami, which was conjoined with its sister fair CONTEXT Art Miami in Wynwood, and Aqua Art Miami on the other side of the causeway. We first attended Aqua Art Miami, so named for its host, the Aqua Hotel. Since 2005, the fair has filled room after room, and even the hotel’s hallways, with works by emerging galleries and mid-career artists. Tampa based gallery CASS Contemporary was among the stand outs this year, with their selection of new works by artists like Oakland based painter and street artist Allison Torneros, better known as Hueman, whimsical drawings with fantastical characters by French artist Amandine Urruty, and ink and gouache paintings by Berlin based Andrea Wan. Yesterday, we brought you our highlights of UNTITLED art fair, SCOPE Miami Beach, Miami Project and Art on Paper. Today, we continue our coverage with one of the most popular fairs during the jam-packed Miami Art Week- PULSE Miami Beach. Despite the dreary Miami weather, PULSE was in high attendance and notable for its engaging and interactive installations in collaboration with Target that attracted art lovers of every age. Designed as a platform for new video and media art, “Target Too” combined items sold at Target with art- though some blasted it as a commercial “sell-out”, we couldn’t help but smile at some of the works on display like Daniel Rozin’s Insta-worthy “Troll Mirror”, a mirror made of hundreds of pink and green treasure trolls that reflected your silhouette as you moved around the piece. As part of our on-going Miami Art Week coverage, we also went to check out the best of the Miami Project and Art on Paper fairs. Though previously the home of NADA, this year, the Deauville Beach Resort on South Beach played host to the neighboring sister fairs. Miami Project is now in its fourth year and known for exhibiting lesser known galleries than the monstrous Basel, while Art on Paper focused on primarily paper works, though this was not a rule strictly followed by the work on display. Hi-Fructose readers need no introduction to the plethora of artists and galleries that were featured in this year’s installment of SCOPE Miami Beach. Known as the biggest worldwide professional show of modern art, 2015 marked the fair’s 15th anniversary. Despite heavy rains and winds that led to water seeping into the fair’s signature white tent, attendance was higher than ever- roughly 49,000 attended compared to last year’s 45,000 attendees.
