Gina Kiel’s vibrant murals are informed by the spaces and walls they inhabit across the globe. Her work has recently adorned spots in New Zealand, Hawaii, and Mexico.
Clive Barker, the British artist, film director, and author, comes to the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica with a new show. “Wunderkammer,” running Aug. 6-27, focuses on the artist’s neo-expressionist paintings. Like Barker’s work in other mediums, the subject matter leans toward fantasy and horror imagery. But as the title suggests (translated to mean the “Cabinet of Curiosities” of the Renaissance), there’s both a playful and mysterious nature to this body of work.
Swiss artist Urs Fischer, based in New York, adapts the human face into topographical forms in his paintings. Works like "Landscape," above, are crafted from aluminum panel, reinforced polyurethane foam, epoxy, acrylic ink, primer, paint, and silkscreen, and gesso. These paintings reorganize visages into landscapes, with the artist's own face used in differing ways. The recent show “Mind Moves,” erected at Gagosian Gallery in San Francisco, was accompanied by a quote from the artist: “At its core, art is all about order. When you're an artist, you basically arrange, rearrange, or alter; you play off order.”

In a new collection of paintings and drawings, Kevin Cyr pays tribute to the working class via worn vehicles spotted and documented around New York City. “Labor Day” at Jonathan Levine Projects in New Jersey progresses the artist’s love affair with the concept of what vehicles say about the people who drive them. Cyr first appeared in the pages of this magazine in Hi-Fructose Vol. 10, and he’s part of the “Turn the Page: The First 10 Years of Hi-Fructose” exhibit, currently at Crocker Art Museum.

Hi-Fructose is surprised and honored beyond measure to be Chris Mars' pick for "Artists of the Year" for the City Pages (Minneapolis Weekly.) This would be a full blow blog post but we're trying to show some restraint and modesty by posting this to the News section. Chris Mars is a Minneapolis-based artist whose work is included in several public collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minnesota History Center. His debut monograph, Tolerance , was released in September by Billy Shire Fine Arts Press/Last Gasp Publishing.

Juanjo Surace’s expertise in animation and character design comes through the murals he crafts on walls across the globe. His surreal work often confronts themes from our own reality, from death and solitude to technology and consumption. The above work, "The Trip," was painted over 14 days in Vinaròs.
Paris-based duo MonkeyBird is known for enormous stencil work on walls across the globe. Their anthropomorphic figures, often rendered as black-and-white line drawings, are set against gorgeously rendered architecture and Nouveau designs. Recent work has always taken the pair’s work inside spaces.
Chicago-based artist Joey D. has garnered a reputation for his pop-surrealist murals and animations. His work recalls, in some cases, '90s-era animation and the iconography of the Chicago area.

Painter Peter Ferguson returns to Roq La Rue Gallery with "Skip Forward When Held," bringing his sensibility that blends notes of the Dutch Renaissance, Lovecraftian creatures, and more. Jessica Stoller's porcelain sculptures both examine art-historical notions of the material and how the female body has been depicted. Her current show at PPOW Gallery in New York City, titled “Spread,” offers new pieces from the artist. The show runs through Feb. 15 at the space.
