Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan tackle displacement, community development, and memory in their cities and structures made of cardboard. Their work ranges from these sculptures and installations to drawing, paintings, and works on paper. Their current, major installation at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, “Pillars: Project Another Country,” “explores fundamental ideas about what creates community, what constitutes family, and how homes are fabricated around human needs and relationships.”
The London Police
When the first-ever END-to-END festival recently landed in Charlotte, N.C., it added nearly two-dozen murals to the 76-acre Camp North End, which began its existence as a Model T factory and is a now a burgeoning mixed-use site with industrial structures in-tact. Creating under the name “ffembroidery,” Patricia Larocque’s embroidered characters are packed with anxiety and pop cultural influences. The artist has used multiple techniques to craft these faces, which can take up to 25 hours to craft. She often shares process photos and other insights on her Instagram page.
Ukraine-born, Paris-based artist Nikolay Tolmachev crafts provocative watercolor paintings showcasing a knack for elegance and wry humor. The artist’s practice also delves in illustration, recently providing work for a release of the classic narrative poem “Kateryna” by Taras Shevchenko.
A terrifying force from the natural world comes into focus in Jana Euler’s current show, “Great White Fear,” at Galerie Neu in Berlin. Running through May 30, this collection of the artist’s acrylic and oil paintings centered on sharks is both visceral and varied in approach.
