Rijksmuseum Focuses on Outdoor Sculptures of Bourgeois

With "Louise Bourgeois in the Rijksmuseum Gardens," the Amsterdam museum offers the first major exhibition to focus solely on the beloved artist’s outdoor sculptures. More than half a century is represented in these works, which include her famed, enormous spiders and other unsettling metal forms. Works include “The Blind Leading the Blind” and “Crouching Spider,” both existing on opposite ends of her career.

With “Louise Bourgeois in the Rijksmuseum Gardens,” the Amsterdam museum offers the first major exhibition to focus solely on the beloved artist’s outdoor sculptures. More than half a century is represented in these works, which include her famed, enormous spiders and other unsettling metal forms. Works include “The Blind Leading the Blind” and “Crouching Spider,” both existing on opposite ends of her career.

The Rijksmuseum offers some insight into these specific works in the gardens: “It is rare that an artist’s oeuvre so closely reflects his or her life that it seems to directly embody specific events and feelings. The twelve Louise Bourgeois sculptures, on display in the Rijksmuseum gardens from this spring, will form an intimate journal of recurring themes in the life and work of the artist. Several of the works relate to Bourgeois’s childhood, for example. The monumental works Spider (1996), Spider Couple (2003) and Crouching Spider (2003) can be seen as homages to her protective mother, a weaver. The high-gloss aluminium sculptures of Untitled (2004), hanging from the branches of the great wingnut tree, refer to her father’s habit of storing chairs by hanging them on roof beams in the attic of their home. Motherhood and Bourgeois’s own youth are recurring themes in the artist’s work, as are fear, friendship, materiality and the body.”

José Luis Torres is an Argentinean artist currently living in Quebec who builds largescale works out of salvaged objects. He's set up public art installations and sculptures all over the world, using everything from antique doors, window panes, to assemblages of brightly colored plastic as his materials. Often, his works have an overflowing effect as they burst from existing environments and architectural structures. His latest work entitled "Overflows" is a part of the 2015 Passages Insolites (Unusual Passages) event in Quebec City’s Old Port.
The work of Australian artist Ian Strange is a mix of installation, photography, sculpture, and architecture. In these site-specific works, Strange will use an entire house as a canvas, filming his efforts to further explore concepts like “home” or “suburbia.” A recent pop-up exhibition of "Suburban" at New York’s Standard Practice Gallery featured large-scale photographs and video that documented his so-called “interventions.”
In Rosa de Jong's "Micro Matter" series, the sculptor and art director crafts miniature structures that appear to be ripped from the earth. The artist uses varying materials to craft these buildings and landscapes, including cardboard, tree bark, thread, watercolor paint, and plastic. The work is both suspended and placed in capsules, offering a 360-degree view of de Jong’s sculptures for viewers.
English artist Chris Wood creates glass wall-panels that showcase maze-like structures that give the illusion of depth and brilliance through the glass’ interaction with natural and artificial light sources. The artist’s usage of small, reflective, dichroic (meaning "two color") pieces of glass lets her easily create complex patterns of light and shade; the colors and textures that derive from these structures change in accordance to the position of the viewer and the angle of the light source, making her work an ever-changing, almost magical and intriguing phenomenon.
