Katy Ann Gilmore’s Drawings Distort Depth, Perspective

Los Angeles artist Katy Ann Gilmore has a background in both art and mathematics, using that knowledge to craft work that looks at "the relationship between 2D, perpendicular planes and their distortions into 3D space.” Her drawings add illusions and a context to otherwise ordinary and flat spaces.

“Gilmore brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to her practice, drawing on her past academic work in both art and mathematics,” a recent statement says. “Strategic, controlled, and logical, her aesthetic and creativity is structured by this methodological reliance on mathematical ways of working. … Her interest in structures, both spatial and disciplinary, reveal a fundamental curiosity about the world at large, both natural and humanly contrived. Though based in hand drawing, her works often use mathematical formulae, graphs, or equations to get to the desired end result. It is through this application of systems that something larger about the nature of perception and experience is revealed through her compositions.”

Jim Dingilian's work comes in the form of a message in a bottle, which he draws with the tip of candle on the glass's surface. The result is a smokey image nestled within the bottle's concave shape. Dingilian uses his unconventional medium in a way that evokes India ink, impressively handling the flame like a brush. His scenes are well-defined and highly detailed. Dingilian has fun with layering opaque and translucent layers of smoke, resulting in complex scenes within each vessel.
With a new piece dated every few days between November 2014 and January 2015, Mike Giant's latest series of drawings serves as a map of the current state of the artist's life. Though Giant is originally from New Mexico, his name is synonymous with the San Francisco graffiti and tattoo scenes, where he developed himself as an artist in the 1990s and 2000s. With rapid gentrification squeezing out many of San Francisco's creative enclaves, Giant relocated to Boulder, Colorado two years ago. His upcoming solo show, "Colorado," opens at FFDG in San Francisco on February 13, meditates on various transitions in Giant's life — his move halfway across the country, the end of a relationship, and various shifts in his lifestyle choices.

Ben Sack's drawings posit his viewers above sprawling megalopolises. As we gaze down, thousands of buildings appear to go on for miles: Sack painstakingly renders each detail with pen and ink. Judging by the time lapse videos he posts of his pieces, he seems to draw them freestyle without much pre-planning. The process video of his recent piece, Chronoglyph (pictured above), reveals Sack filling in loosely sketched circles with elaborate line work. With each drawing standing close to human height, Sack's work invites viewers to get lost in the many nooks and crannies of his fantasy cities.
