Mazatl’s Eye-Popping Murals Across Mexico

Mexico City artist Mazatl crafts murals that both implement and emulate the artist's talents in woodcut imagery. In frequent collaborations with fellow mural and graphic artists like Kill Joy, the artist’s distinct use of blacks and perspective make for eye-popping efforts across unexpected spots. The above mural, in Cholula, Puebla, is one of the artists’ most recent pieces.

“Mazatl is a graphic maker who uses the public space as his main way to communicate ideas and emotions seeking to create conversations towards collective liberation,” says Justseeds, a cooperative that includes Mazatl. “Mazatl’s work is characterized by interventions of large scale woodcuts in the public areas, as well as graphic murals. He dedicates a large part of his work towards collaborating with groups, collectives, other artists and movements that seek social, political and environmental justice in our communities.”

Taking cue from street art's global influence, Urban Forms in Lodz, Poland is turning their city into a large, outdoor urban art gallery. Founded in 2009, the main idea of this project was to change the city center by creating large-format artworks directly on the facades of buildings. This project has resulted in over 30 large murals scattered around the city by international and Polish artists, including works by Os Gemeos, Aryz, Etam Cru and Inti from past years.
Greek artist Stamatis Laskos aka Sive contorts proportions to create a wonderful re-imagining of human anatomy. Laskos, who works in both street art and illustration, creates surreal worlds inhabited by figures with abstracted bodies, bearing elongated limbs and caricature-esque faces with stretched noses and ears. His street art is painted with cool, earthy colors applied with raw brushstrokes. Laskos's illustrative works, while having less range of color, are still rendered with impressive detail and texture.
Darel Carey takes something as simple as a line and creates new worlds and dimensions. The artist says that the work is partially intended to transform the space it inhabits, taking a flat surface and crafting entirely new depth. His projects have recently appeared in the Museum of Selfies, Edwardsville Arts Center, and other spaces. These spacial explorations share a kinship with the work of Felipe Pantone and others who alter everyday canvases.
