The Colorful, Absorbing Worlds of Mi Ju

Whether they're her bug-eyed, psychedelic deities or creatures made of brightly colored fruits, Mi Ju’s curious creations have us looking at both the big and small picture. On the surface, her characters float through seemingly chaotic worlds buzzing with wild energy. A closer look reveals a whole universe of tiny, emoji-like faces, animals and flora that together make up the larger image. Mi Ju was born in Daegu, South Korea in 1983. Growing up, she often spent time observing the diverse patterns and textures of fabrics in her father’s textile factory, or exploring the ornate Buddhist temples where her mother worked as a florist. As a student, Ju traveled to Australia and North America, where she encountered the aboriginal topographical art and Native American totem poles that continue to inform her aesthetic. The artist also draws heavily from Korean folk art and scientific theory, such as the Gaia principle, in her various works.



Now living in Brooklyn, the artist has brought her paintings to solo and group exhibitions in Copenhagen, New York, San Francisco, and Seoul. Her work is part of collections at the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in Los Angeles and Ole Faarup in Copenhagen.



“My work is an improvisation in liminality: between dream and concretized, ancient and contemporary, Korea and the West, ephemeral and eternal, the uncensored and codified,” her artist statement (from Joshua Liner Gallery) reads. “Each character, pattern and energy reflects states of consciousness that are revealed in the creative act, a form of both improvisation and organization wherein the uncensored is working in concert with momentary, yet specific compositional organizations. It is my intention that the work will be a place of meeting between memory, dream and fantasy, and concretized into meaningful visual terms.”

Mexican artist José Luis López Galván works with oil paint to create dark and unsettling scenes that can be simultaneously erotic and grotesque. His paintings further estrange the viewer by calling to mind wildly different artistic styles, from the quietly dramatic chiaroscuro of Rembrandt to the surrealism of Dali. López Galván maximizes the dramatic potential of oils, creating lush and eerie tableaux that are populated by enigmatic characters, such as anthropomorphic and lavishly attired rabbits, disembodied limbs and half-human robots. As in paintings by the Old Masters, López Galván’s storybook-like scenes often feel like allegories for a larger narrative. In this case though, the background story resembles the logic of a nightmare or a hallucination more than the workings of the divine.
Bangkok-based artist Aof Smith is known for his candy-colored, Pop-Surrealist scenes, cacophonies of his distinct cutesy characters and unsettling action. Smith’s massive paintings contain even stranger details upon inspection. His figures often stand in contrast, with humans offering an odd point of entry in these wild narratives.
Inspired by both the culture of the Khmer people of Cambodia and California's street culture, Andrew Hem crafts vibrant peeks into everyday life. In a new show at Galerie Openspace titled “Fragmentz,” his recent experimentations are offered. Hem was last featured on HiFructose.com here and crafted the cover for HF Vol. 21.
Andy Kehoe crafts fantastical mixed-media paintings often featuring strange, antlered creatures that move through forests. There’s an unexpected depth to Kehoe’s paintings due to his process of painting on top of layers of poured resins. Kehoe uses “sculpted elements made of polymer clay into his works, submerging the forms beneath the strata of pigmented layers.” The artist has a new show at Thinkspace Gallery titled "Prismatic."
