Earlier today, we brought you photos from Saturday night’s opening of Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose, a bi-coastal collaboration between the magazine and Virginia MOCA. To conceive and create a high quality art magazine is a considerable undertaking. To nurture your publication until it becomes a best-seller is an incredible accomplishment. That’s what artists and co-founders Attaboy and Annie Owens-Seifert did when they saw a need for an art magazine that celebrated diverse art that transcended genres. Turn the Page brings together names straight from the pages of Hi-Fructose who might not otherwise be found under the same roof:

AJ Fosik, Audrey Kawasaki, Barnaby Barford, Beth Cavener, Brian Dettmer, Brian McCarty, Camille Rose Garcia, Chris Berens, Erwin Wurm, Femke Hiemstra, Fulvio di Piazza, Gehard Demetz, Greg “Craola” Simkins, James Jean, Jean-Pierre Roy***, Jennybird Alcantara, Jeremy Geddes, Josh Keyes, Kate MacDowell***, Kazuki Takamatsu, Kehinde Wiley, Kevin Cyr, Kris Kuksi, Marion Peck, Marco Mazzoni, Mark Dean Veca, Mark Ryden, Martin Whitfooth, MARS-1, Nicola Verlato, Olek, Ray Caesar, Ron English, Sam Gibbons, Scott Hove, Shepard Fairey, Tara McPherson, Tiffany Bozic, Tim Biskup, Todd Schorr, Tracey Snelling, Travis Louie, Victor Castillo, Wayne White and Yoshitomo Nara.

The colorful works of Hawaii native Ekundayo (HF Vol. 9) combine surrealism with influences from his graffiti days. His paintings sometimes lean on the nightmarish, as in his portrayal of anthropomorphic subjects in haunting scenes. On Saturday, he will debut a new series with "Collective Reflections" at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles. Ekundayo describes his solo as a "gift to that feeling I know we all connect to when reaching deep within ourselves." Check out our preview after the jump!
The vulnerable, fantastical oil paintings of Scott G. Brooks offer both narratives and raw portraiture. Though the artist has a knack for large-scale, intricate scenes, he can pack immense power in his single-character works. Brooks was last featured on our website here. In a statement, the artist talks about where his paintings come from.
The arresting paintings of Daniel Bilodeau blend realism with abstraction and sculptural techniques. A new show at Thinkspace Projects in Culver City, titled “State of the Art,” offers new works by the Canadian-American artist. The show runs through Jan. 26 at the gallery. Bilodeau was last featured on HiFructose.com here.
Adrian Cox’s oil paintings capture scenes with his fictional Border Creatures, dwellers of the so-called “Borderlands” and hybrid creatures that blend the flora, fauna, and minerals of their environment. In two new shows, one at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco and the other at Australia’s beinArt Gallery, Cox tells new narratives within this context. Both shows run through most of June. You may remember Cox from this 2015 HiFructose.com piece on the artist.
