Mark Ryden Revisits Cover, Crafts New Work for Michael Jackson Exhibition

An exhibition currently running at National Portrait Gallery features Michael Jackson-inspired art, with Mark Ryden's cover for the 1991 record "Dangerous" prominently featured. But it’s not just the original painting: Ryden crafted an entirely new work, “The King of Pop,” to house the piece.

Mark Ryden Exhibits New Paintings and Bronze Sculpture in “Dodecahedron”

Pop Surrealist Mark Ryden (Hi-Fructose Vol. 18) has long incorporated alchemy and numerology in his fairytale-like world, filled with symbols and strange letters. The Los Angeles based artist once said that if he hadn't pursued art, his next choice would have been math or science. For his upcoming exhibition "Dodecahedron", opening December 10th at Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, Ryden looked to geometry for inspiration. His exhibition is so named after the "dodecahedron", a 12-sided geometric shape of perfect symmetry and mystery.

On View: Keiichi Tanaami at Sikkema Jenkins & Co Gallery

Japanese Pop artist Keiichi Tanaami has rarely seen artwork now on view at New York contemporary art gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co. When we covered his 2013 solo exhibition at Mizuma Gallery, his art went through a turning point. His fascination with life after a near-death experience inspired him to look to the future, rather than the past. The artwork in this show is not new- but Tanaami's mixture of motifs from the past inspires modern questions that keeps his art relevant.

Riikka Hyvönen Captures the Beauty of Bruises in Giant Artworks

Most of us flinch when we see a bad bruise. Finland born, Helsinki based artist Riikka Hyvönen sees an inspiring myriad of colors that tell a story. Her art combines hyperrealism painting with sculptural elements, pop and kitsch styles, taking the pain that we have all experienced at some point and making it strangely alluring. She calls bruises "kisses", specifically worn by roller derby girls, of which she collects photographs and then reinterprets into large-scale artworks.
