After working solely in graphite, the artist has recently expanded to add more oil painting to her repertoire, often portraying romantic images of birds and flowers. Her technique shares sensibilities with Chinese bird-and-flower painting, where subjects can be compared to almost all thoughts and feelings of a person. They can symbolize feminine beauty, virtues, and omens. Inspired by mythological themes, Foley also adds symbolic meaning to her pieces. In her painting of a kingfisher, for instance, she portrays a father kingfisher who stole a flaming arrow from the gods. Viewers can read more about the stories behind her works at her blog.

"A Student's Dream," the central oil painting in Mario Moore's new show, is inspired by the artist's recent surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. "Recovery" kicks off at David Klein Gallery in Detroit at the end of the month, and in the show, the artist looks at how African-American men experience recovery from hardship and trauma.
We previously featured Australian artist Matthew Quick's paintings of well known monuments, titled "The Accidental Empires" here on the blog. Inspired by the rise and fall of historical empires, the artist took these symbols of power and made them more personable by portraying them with everyday objects. He continues this concept with his latest series of oil paintings, "Monumental Nobodies".
Using acrylics and oils on wood panels, Marc Burckhardt creates timeless, fantastical paintings packed with allegory and storytelling. The artist cites Northern Renaissance and Dutch secular painting as influences in his work, with his own, personal narratives woven into each creation. Though each piece only focuses on one or a handful of beings, lush backdrops and detail add to the absorbing quality to these works.
