Camilla d’Errico
Tomorrow night, Canadian artists Sarah Joncas and Camilla d’Errico bring together their colorful concepts of beauty in “Beauty in the Breakdown” at Thinkspace Gallery, Los Angeles. Their exhibition falls on the near 10 year anniversary of their first showing at Thinkspace, which showcased their complementary design sensibilities. Since then, both artists have developed in leaps and bounds stylistically, here portraying a spectrum of emotions in their portraits of women. Camilla d’Errico continues to combine her Japanese Manga-inspired aesthetic with drippy rainbow concoctions, which we’ve seen from her throughout this year. Her signature “Helmet girls” have shed their clothing in newly empowered images that confront the viewer in a playful way.
In counterpart, Sarah Joncas shares this theme with more subdued portraits of both men and women. Though not as popular, Joncas admits, painting male figures has been a welcome challenge for her especially. Her illustrations of women are powerful in their multi-sided portrayal, whether they are tattooed alternative and strong individuals, or in a state of melancholy. In this emotional breakdown of her subjects over the span of 15 new paintings, there is beauty to be found in all facets.
“Beauty in the Breakdown” by Sarah Joncas and Camilla d’Errico will be on view at Thinkspace, with Anthony Clarkson in the Project Room, February 28 through March 21, 2015.
