Fred Stonehouse’s Surreal Paintings Explore Vulnerabilities

Fred Stonehouse's paintings look like they take place within the innermost crevices of a troubled mind rather than in any semblance of a real place. Unshaven, rugged, yet boyish, his characters seem to battle internal conflicts, feelings of guilt, and insecurities. Their inner demons come across as loaded visual symbols (and sometimes actual demons), which Stonehouse elucidates with text scrawled within each work.

Unshaven, rugged, yet boyish, his characters seem to battle internal conflicts, feelings of guilt, and insecurities. Their inner demons come across as loaded visual symbols (and sometimes actual demons), which Stonehouse elucidates with text scrawled within each work.

“He Found Himself In a Situation Where He Was Constantly Being Asked to Do Things For Which He Was Not Qualified,” a painting is labeled. Below the text, a man with sweat beaded on his forehead wades into a swamp with the caption “Unknown.” Stonehouse makes his fears and vulnerabilities humorous and relatable, and it’s likely readers will see something of themselves in his works. He will debut a new series of paintings on February 5 at Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea in Milan for his two-person show with Esther Pearl Watson, “Family Lexicon.” Today we take a look at his new works as well as some pieces from the past year.

Curated by artist Gromyko Semper, "Endangered Visions" is a group show with a wide breadth of artists but a short longevity. Set to premiere at ManilART, the Philippines' largest annual art fair, October 15 through 19, the show features dozens of Filipino and international artists who work with surreal imagery, albeit in vastly different ways. Robots battle in a world that seems simultaneously prehistoric and futuristic in Rob Sato's watercolors. The artist (first featured in HF Vol. 16) defies the limitations of his medium both in content and in format. While watercolor paintings are typically kept small, he works at mural scale, rendering the precise outlines of his giant robots, warriors on horseback and bizarre humanoid characters. The softness of the watercolor is still there, adding a handmade touch to his mechanical subject matter. Sato's latest exhibition "Curses" opens on September 20 at Martha Otero Gallery in LA and features several massive works, folded paintings that become sculptural objects, some simplified sketches and painted baseballs that seem to take their cue from the cave walls of Lascaux.
