Alice Lin’s Melancholy Drawings Evoke Storybook Illustrations

Beijing-based painter and illustrator Alice Lin creates nostalgic, whimsical works on paper. The world she develops evokes Victorian-era storybook illustrations with its lush, ornate flora as a recurring decorative motif, but the artist's imagery is far more contemplative and melancholic. Using watercolor and natural mineral pigment, she envelopes her characters in a marbled texture with wisps of gradients that seem to float though her scenes like fog. As viewers, we come upon her characters in moments of contemplation, staring with downcast eyes or obscuring their faces from our gaze.

Israeli artist Nir Hod once told Interview Magazine, his greatest discovery was that "it's not easy getting older." In his painting series "Genius," Hod pulls at the tension between childhood and adulthood and breaks open a space in between innocence and inurement. His images are of young children smoking cigarettes and looking at the viewer with expressions of disdain, arrogance and suspicion. Though there is certainly an element of dark humor in dressing rosy-cheeked toddlers in rich fabrics and endowing them with sweeping hair, the paintings are disquieting for their ability to reflect one's now-corrupted inner child back unto him.

The lines between art and product design become blurred in Mark Dean Veca's upcoming exhibition, "Everlast," at Western Project in LA. While some artists appropriate the language of advertising to critique consumer culture, Veca (featured in HF Vol. 23) enjoys looking at logos and views them as a perfect marriage between images and text. For "Everlast," which opens on October 18, he looked back on the signage that surrounded him during his 1970s upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of the logos in the show are borrowed and some are original, but Veca transforms them with his rich, illustrative line work. Forms that would normally be flat come alive with the biomorphic textures for which he is known.

Lauren YS recently returned to her comic roots with her use of black inks in the recent show "CORPUS FLUX." The show at Juddy Roller in Melbourne featured several new drawings, exploring social and technological themes, along with a new mural adorning the building. YS was last featured on our site in this studio visit.

With only the uniform confines of 12 inches x 12 inches in size, nearly 90 artists contribute to the latest edition of the group effort "LAX / SFO.” The third iteration of the Thinkspace Projects-curated program begins at Heron Arts in San Francisco on Saturday. Among the contributing artists are Alex Garant, Anthony Hurd, Baldur Helgason, Casey Weldon, Fumi Nakamura, Jeremy Fish, Jolene Lai, Logan Hicks, Pichi Avo, Wiley Wallace, Yok & Sheryo, and many, many more.
