Chris Berens Creates New Paintings for New Young Adult Fiction Book

Dutch painter Chris Berens's work (featured in our book Hi-Fructose Collected 3) can be described as storybook-like with a darker twist. His light, airy paintings have a luminescence about them, as if his figures and the spaces they inhabit have a crystalline translucency that imbues them a magical-feeling ambiance. Berens recently collaborated with best-selling young adult fiction author Kami Garcia on an illustration project. An artist herself, Garcia is a long-time admirer of Berens and asked him to create three new paintings to be reprinted in her forthcoming novel, Unmarked. We bring you a first look at these new pieces before they debut in the book, which hits stores later this week.

Originally from Japan, Yasuaki Okamoto lived in Barcelona, London, and Montreal before settling down in New York, where he is currently based. His paintings of quirky underwater scenes take inspiration from various experiences he had during his world travels. Through a storybook-like style, Okamoto paints cornucopias of brightly-colored sea creatures and underwater plants. His work draws a stark contrast between this aquatic paradise and the war and chaos on the earth above. While fighter jets and satellites fly through the sky, the colorful creatures coexist in perfect harmony under water.
Chris Berens brings his distinctive blend of painting and collage to Jaski Gallery in Amsterdam with the show “Feniks." Among these new works is a massive "Crowning Glory," for which the artist constructed a handmade wooden frame. (Berens was featured in the “Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose” exhibition.) "Feniks" kicks off on Dec. 7 and runs through Dec. 22.
Taiwan-born artist Chen Dao Lee’s creates ambiguous narratives of unresolved tensions. His style is nearly photorealistically perfect. His compositions are taut and vigorous. If the light in his work made a noise, it would be loud and blaring. It’s his choice of subject that makes the work provocative. Each piece features young, beautiful, semi-clad women with garish red hair. Some hold automatic weapons. Some wrestle with each other. Some engage in sexual escapades with other women. Some do so with other men. These women are young, beautiful, and... bored.
Woodrow White’s paintings often explore and utilize pop culture and current social issues. The artist's comic sensibilities are shown in not only his ability to subvert familiar imagery, but also frame scenes in ways that elicit unexpected results. White was last mentioned on HiFructose.com for a show with his father, artist Wayne White.
