Reka’s New Mural Adds Color to Shoreditch

Berlin-based artist Reka recently travelled to London for his current solo show "Trip the Light" at StolenSpace Gallery (see our preview here) and left a mural behind in the Shoreditch district. While the graceful movements of dancers' bodies served as the inspiration for the paintings in Reka's exhibition, the mural took on a more playful, illustrative look despite its shared Modernist aesthetic. Over a black background, Reka painted free-flowing, abstract forms. Some of them emerge as illustrations of specific objects — a fish head, a chess piece with an all-seeing eye — while others keep the viewer asking questions. Is that a spray can with the punk slogan ACAB? The whimsical piece is intended to keep us guessing.

While it's possible to observe trees growing over the course of months and years, German artist David Stegmann aka Dust paints roots, branches and vines as sentient beings caught amid a state of evolution. In Dust's two latest murals, "Wohnzimmerwelten" and "Witness the Fitness," (both completed in Germany in the past two months) his otherworldly trees sprawl out across long walls (one of the pieces is 32 meters long) with force and momentum. The murals preceded the opening of Dust's current show, "Concrete Jungle," with Patricia Sandonis at Galerie Merkle in Stuttgart, Germany. Endowing plants with movement and speed is Dust's signature. The high-velocity branches take on new forms, reminding viewers of the powers that lie in the soil, the roots and the trees.
United by their psychedelic imagery, members of the Furtherrr collective frequently collaborate on walls and paintings. Mars-1 (featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 26), Damon Soule and Oliver Vernon (Hi-Fructose Vol. 17 cover artist) completed a huge, hallucinatory landscape on a wall in Denver co-curated by Furtherrr and Brian Chambers. Nearby, their friends and colleagues Justin Lovato, Joe Hengst and NoMe Edonna worked on a separate piece. Filled with starkly contrasting colors, Mars-1, Soule and Vernon's mural looks as if it's emitting neon light from its black background. An electric blue, glowing beam cuts across the wall horizontally while radiating forms explode from their centers on different parts of the plane. One can trace parts of each artist's signature motifs — Mars's dotted orbs, Soule's ray-like stripes, Vernon's expressionistic marks tamed into geometric shapes — but the collaboration is almost seamless.
Ricky Lee Gordon, who also paints under the moniker of Freddy Sam, is a Cape Town, South Africa based artist focused on bringing to light social issues with his large scale murals. "My intention with this and all my murals is to create an artwork that has meaning to the community who will live with the mural," Gordon writes at his blog. He is also known for his curatorial work and creative activism, notably as the co-founder of Colour Ikamva, an art outreach program designed to re-imagine education through creativity and self-empowerment.
