The fine art of Los Angeles-based illustrator Kwanchai Moriya blends the look of classic ’50s sci-fi with elements of expressionism and surrealism, creating a world of mysterious, ray-gun wielding heroes and heroines. His loose brush work appears to capture his subjects mid-motion and gives the pieces a murky, atmospheric feel. The blocky patches of color come together like a mosaic of different hues, playing off the shapes and patterns that surround his subjects, with circles and dots reminiscent of planetary orbits or atom diagrams. In addition to his use of geometric shapes, Moriya’s use of contrasting colors adds the work’s pop-inspired aesthetic.
