The foundation of Caroline Slotte‘s art is familiar. Growing up, like many homes, our’s had the “fine china” set aside for only the most special guests – I spent much more time staring at them then eating off of them. Slotte, however, goes beyond imagining the scene of each plate unfolding, and crafts a narrative herself. She alters this dinnerware in inventive and unexpected ways. At times through adding layers and carving away empty space Slotte creates a sort of dinner plate diorama. Another series finds her stripping the plate of all of its imagery except for the painted skies. Her alterations transform the typical home decor into an intriguing venue for a story to take place.
