While childhood memories can bring about a pleasant feeling of nostalgia, they can also be a source of trauma that follows us into adulthood. Taiwanese artist Peihang Huang’s poignant paintings of battered toys evoke the latter. Huang’s paint strokes are loose and expressionistic, mapping out the figurative elements through saturated colors, the gradation of which is so nuanced that they appear almost iridescent. A decapitated Barbie doll and maimed Hello Kitty are splattered with blood-like red stains, tragically denouncing the idea of childhood innocence.
