The daughter of a US foreign service officer, Katherine Mann takes inspiration from her early travels throughout Asia and the Middle East, drawing from different cultural traditions of landscape painting for her large-scale, mixed media works. Her abstract pieces span several feet in each direction, creating patterns from disparate textures that range from messy and expressionistic to tightly-controled. Her pieces incorporate traditional Chinese ink painting techniques and pair materials like sumi ink on Yupo paper with acrylic. Mann has a solo show opening at New York’s gallery nine5 on October 10.
