On June 22, painter Deedee Cheriel will present a new body of work titled “Episodes in the Abundant Oasis” at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. A series of allegorical paintings, Cheriel’s work takes its inspiration from sources as disparate as Indian folk art, her punk rock roots in the Pacific Northwest and her lived experiences. “Wanting something that is unattainable, living with a sick boyfriend, trying to connect with girlfriends of different racial and social standings — all these experiences become anthropomorphic characters entangled in folkloric fairytales in my work,” said the artist. Cheriel will be showing alongside Femke Hiemstra and Mel Kadel June 22 through July 20 at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Take a look at the work in the show below.
