Known for her cross-section paintings, New York-based artist Hilary Harkness presents elaborate interiors peeled open like doll houses. Populated by scantily-clad, mischievous ladies running amuck, the paintings offer a glimpse into a surreal world inhabited solely by women. An aesthetic referencing CGI and video games is counterbalanced by historical allusions to Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, who both have cameos in the works. Blending elements of the avant-garde era and the digital age, Harkness’ works present a fantastical, celebratory view of womanhood.
