Opening Night: D Young V’s “The New Race” at White Walls

For his solo show “The New Race,” which opened last Saturday at White Walls in San Francisco, D Young V transformed the entire gallery space into an austere dystopia, filling the walls with intricate installations, murals and large canvases. While portraiture is at the core of Young’s work, this show’s immersive installation transported viewers into the artist’s surreal vision of a post-apocalyptic future. Painted helmets and guns surrounded the paintings on the walls, but despite the disparate media, the various elements in the show were pulled together with repeating details and cryptic imagery.
