Riikka Sormunen’s Sensual Lounging Women

The sensual lounging women by illustrator and artist Riikka Sormunen take on an abstracted form as the figures blend into complex and visually stunning environments. These compositions are filled with cleverly placed patterns and bold contrasting lines. Sormunen was born in Helsinki, Finland. She is now living in Canada and illustrates for publications such as The New York Times and Image magazine. The bold patterns she creates in the textiles and decor in her paintings are reminiscent of quintessential French artist Henri Matisse's works of lounging women such as Odalisque with Arms Raised, 1923. Matisse used layers, shapes, and rich patterns that added visual depth and dimension to his 20th century paintings. See more after the jump!
