An artist always seeking to elevate his viewers’ social consciousness through his work, Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada (interviewed here) recently unveiled an enormous land artwork in Amsterdam commissioned by the feminist organization Mama Cash for their campaign, Vogelvrije Vrouwen — Defend women who defend human rights! A portrait of an anonymous Mesoamerican woman, the work carries both a cautionary and uplifting message. It is at once a tribute to female activists as it is a protest against their persecution in the Mesoamerican region. The portrait was completed with the assistance of 80 volunteers and spans almost two football fields. Take a look at some photos of the piece and its process courtesy of Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada and take a virtual tour of the piece on Amsterdam360.
