Ana Elisa Egreja’s Feral, Baroque Interiors

Brazilian artist Ana Elisa Egreja creates baroque interiors in her oil paintings, staging scenarios where civilization and nature meet. Rich tapestries, antique furniture and elaborate ornaments seem to be left abandoned; the lack of human activity invites animals to creep in. We see small cats and birds (sometimes even exotic zoo animals) tampering with the refined decor, perhaps making a comment on humans’ attempt to separate themselves from the animal world through such highly cultivated living spaces.
