Max Rippon’s “Signs, Fines & Cheap Wines” Opening Night

Last Thursday, Max Rippon aka Ripo opened his solo show, “Signs, Fines & Cheap Wines” at San Francisco’s White Walls Gallery. We were able to see some of his installations in their construction phase when we recently visited his studio. Using street signs and various other relics of public spaces, Ripo mixed found objects in the gallery space from San Francisco and Barcelona that the cities’ residents take for granted. The ubiquitous floral street tiles from Barcelona and San Francisco construction signs — even an SF liquor store sign that says Barcelona Liquors, ironically enough — brought a sense of nostalgia that the artist interpreted through his mixed-media assemblages and works on paper.
