James Charles’ “333 Conspiracy” Opening Night

Last Saturday, Shooting Gallery in San Francisco premiered James Charles’ solo show, “333 Conspiracy.” A subtle yet clever art prank, the concept for the series of works began when James Charles began drawing and painting on U.S. currency in 2010, eventually training himself to replicate the bills’ style and texture well enough to seamlessly change the faces and writing on them to his liking. Using either single bills or a many joined together in various shapes, the mostly minuscule works invited the viewer to look closely at the altered faces and writing to catch inside jokes and pop culture references. Take a look at some photos from the opening night.
