Though Kuksi and Ellis might seem like an unlikely match, the two artists draw from distinct epochs from art history to create highly detailed, pristine artworks that match one another in technical skill and innovative use of their respective media. Kris Kuksi’s assemblages combine myriad figures of different proportions in altar-like compositions that recall the sculptures in Gothic cathedrals. David Ellis’ 2d work and installations (including his famous trash sound sculptures, in which trash cans make automated rhythms on a loop), however, have a modernist sensibility that the artist relates to his love of music, especially hip-hop and jazz.
