Untying Space by Sun K. Kwak
Japanese animation and traditional Buddhist art inspires many popular American artists, but we don’t see much contemporary from Asia in this part of the world. Luckily the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is ready to shake up the status quo, unveiling a huge new collection of contemporary Asian art titled “Phantoms of Asia: Contemporary Awakens the Past” this week. With works from artists like renowned film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (who won three awards at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival) and pop surrealist painters such as Fuyuko Matsui, the diverse exhibit shows the vast scope of Asian art from many different countries and aesthetic movements. Take a look at some of the images in the show, courtesy of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
