French street artist, photographer and activist JR recently revisited Kibera, Nairobi (in Kenya), the site of his 28 Millimetres: 2009 Women Are Heroes project. After photographing the local women of the area, JR printed massive portraits of the subjects and affixed over 1,800 square meters of them to the tops of the shanties of the people whom he’s been documenting. The texture of the banners not only help keep out the rain, but also provide international exposure to the struggles of the women and children living underneath. Following the install, JR distributed free copies of the book (signed by the women insided) amongst the local population. The 28 Millimetres Project has touched the lives of women in Kenya, Brazil and Spain. JR just sent us some behind the scenes photos of the installation, check them out here on Hi-Fructose.
