I had a chance to venture on over to SF’s Shooting Gallery in San Francisco
this weekend where KMNDZ (HF vol.7) was showcasing an exhibition and mural. Online his work always looks dynamic and impressive but in-person Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez’ textured multi-media pieces really grab you, as they are presented as time-worn effigies; torn, sanded, drawn on with shades of ball point pen and painted objects where robots reach out to rosary-bead carrying birds. Oklahoma turned SF artist C3 presented a wonderfully dreary collection of drawn snapshots, drawn portraits of yester-year and a surprisingly beautiful display of tiny drawings on toe-tags, expertly framed and installed (but difficult to photograph). Artist Akira’s oil on wood currency paintings replace the founding fathers with present day icons; Santa, Maury, Ronald and the Safeway logo seem pretty appropriate for our times. Check out more photos from the event and images from the show.
